MASSIVE moggie Garfield is thought to be the world's fattest cat - weighing almost THREE STONE.

The ginger giant, from New York, tips the scales at a whopping 38.9lb.

And just like his cartoon namesake, Garfield loves nothing better than lying around and eating whatever food he can find.

Weigh too big ... vets have put him on crash diet
He's just been put on a crash diet after being taken to an animal shelter following the death of his owner.

Staff have banned Garfield from dry grub in a bit to cut his gut by 2lbs a month, encouraging him to play with toys and walk more.

North Shore vet Gerard Leheney said: "This is the fattest cat I have ever seen. My first reaction was astonishment."
Garfield is relatively healthy but finds it difficult to move because his weight is putting strain on his hips.

Shelter staff warned obesity in cats is extremely risky and can lead to diabetes, heart disease, joint, bone and ligament damage, high blood pressure and intolerance to heat.

Garfield may have swiped the unwanted Fattest Cat title from two-year-old Meow, which was 40lbs when he was handed in to a Santa Fe pet shelter in April - but immediately starting losing the lard when put on a low-carbs 'Catkins' diet.
